This is very simple.
I can do it in about 6 seconds (well under 30 seconds if I stop and explain what I'm doing).
The only caution is to ensure you are importing the "events" into the proper calendar.
Even if you import into the wrong calendar, it's just a bit of time to move the events to the proper calendar.

One thing that makes Google Calendar extremely useful is the ability to have multiple calendars so that different type of events can be on separate calendars for organizational purposes, but visible at the same time as other calendars to better identify conflicts or available time.
Before importing events (work schedule), it is important that the calendar already exists to import the events into.
Click "create" (shown) to create a new calendar.

Drag the .ics file from the email to your desktop.

This will bring up the "Import Calendar" Screen.
